I suppose day old news is a bit pointless but not so day old bread. There are 101 uses for it I'm sure; breadcrumbs, bread sauce, stuffing, cheesy croquettes, bread and butter pudding, brown bread ice cream, toast, toasted sandwiches (or is that really the same thing?), gazpacho, Italian bread salad, bruschetta... Relax, I'm not going through all 101 but here's a nice recipe for homemade croutons to put on your soup.
Ingredients
day old bread
olive oil
flavourings
Method
Cut off any crusts from the bread and chop into small squares or bits of any shape you fancy. Drizzle over olive oil, add your flavourings (eg minced garlic/chopped basil/parsley/rosemary/cajun spice), season with salt and pepper and mix altogether. (A nice easy, mess free way of doing that is inside a plastic bag, just drop everything in and shake it about). Put the coated bread pieces onto a baking tray, spread out into a single layer and toast under a hot grill, turn occasionally to make sure they are evenly browned. You could also do this in the oven if you have it on. Will keep for ages in a jar or tin but wait until they cool before you put them in.
